Explaining The Different
Types Of Glass In Windows
Descriptions of the different
types of glass.
Explaining low e glass
Low Emissivity or Low-E glass is
standard glass with a microscopic metallic coating attach to it that
reflects heat. This coating is invisible usually applied to only one
inside surfaces with a double-pane or thermo-pane window.
Self cleaning glass
In a photocatalytic process,
ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun energizes the SunClean Self-Cleaning
glass to help slowly break down and loosen dirt.
Gas Fills
To improve thermal performance of
insulated glazed windows you reduce the conductance between the glass
layers.
Low Conductance Spacers
In order to provide the proper
insulation the layers of glazing must be appropriately separated by
spacers. In the 1960s, window manufactures began using aluminum spacers.
They soon realized because aluminum is an excellent heat conductor when
used as a spacer for most edge systems there was a major heat loss at
the edge of the (IGU) insulated glass unite, reducing the energy
efficiency benefits. This heat loss at the edge of the IGU made the
windows susceptible to condensation.
