Single and Double Hung replacement

The different types of window operating mechanisms for replacement windows
Double-hung windows have a top and bottom sash that can be slide open
vertically. With a single-hung window only the bottom sash can be slid.
The windows can be
open for ventilation from a small opening to one-half the total glass
area. Screens may be placed on either the exterior or interior of the
window. Sliding windowsusually have a greater amount of air leakage than
projecting or hinged windows.
When to Use a Double-Hung Window:

Because of their traditional design, double-hung windows are a perfect
complement for Colonial, Craftsman, French, Shingle, and Victorian,
style homes and buildings.
Space savings:
Double-hung windows do not consuming space when open. They are ideal for
walkways, porches, or patios.
Convenience:
Tilt-wash versions of a double-hung window make it easier for you to
wash.
