Tax Breaks on Window Replacement

 Windows are possible the most visible as well as the most expensive part of your home.

If you've decided that it is finally time to replace your old drafty windows with energy efficient vinyl replacement windows, then now is the time to do it.

During 2006 and 2007, the federal Government is providing tax credits through the energy star program for homeowners who replace their windows and doors with energy star rated products.

Energy star rated products are windows and doors go through a series of tests, which determine precisely how effective it insulates against heat and cold. Depending on how effective a product is in the testing will depend weather or not that product receives a rating and the level of that rating. Windows will not be given an energy star rating unless the window is at least a double pane Low E glass. However, this does not mean that all double pane low E glass will receive an energy star rating.

If you do not see the energy star label, then ensure that the dealer confirms the product is energy star rated. Do not simply take his or her word; you must have the proof in order to receive the tax credit.

Once your windows have been delivered, carefully remove the labels and apply them to a sheet of paper. Make copies to use as proof that the windows do meet the energy star requirements. It is important to know that this is not a tax write off, but a direct deduction from the amount of taxes you owe. The maximum allowable deduction on windows and doors combined is $500. There are other programs that you can also look into such as utility company rebates. In some areas of the country, energy companies, both gas and electric offer rebates based on the total square footage of the windows and doors installed. The amount of money you save with some of these rebates can range from as little as .50 a square foot to $1.50 per sq. ft. To find out more contact your local energy company to see if they offer energy star rebates in your area.
