If you've decided that it is finally time to replace your old drafty
windows with energy efficient vinyl replacement windows, then now is the
time to do it.
During 2006 and 2007, the federal Government is providing tax credits
through the energy star program for homeowners who replace their windows
and doors with energy star rated products.
Energy star rated products are windows and doors go through a series of
tests, which determine precisely how effective it insulates against heat
and cold. Depending on how effective a product is in the testing will
depend weather or not that product receives a rating and the level of
that rating. Windows will not be given an energy star rating unless the
window is at least a double pane Low E glass. However, this does not
mean that all double pane low E glass will receive an energy star
rating.
If you do not see the energy star label, then ensure that the dealer
confirms the product is energy star rated. Do not simply take his or her
word; you must have the proof in order to receive the tax credit.
Once your windows have been delivered, carefully remove the labels and
apply them to a sheet of paper. Make copies to use as proof that the
windows do meet the energy star requirements. It is important to know
that this is not a tax write off, but a direct deduction from the amount
of taxes you owe. The maximum allowable deduction on windows and doors
combined is $500. To learn more about the program go to the
Energy Star website at: www.energystar.gov
There are other programs that you can also look into such as utility
company rebates. In some areas of the country, energy companies, both
gas and electric offer rebates based on the total square footage of the
windows and doors installed. The amount of money you save with some of
these rebates can range from as little as .50 a square foot to $1.50 per
sq. ft. To find out more contact your local energy company to see if
they offer energy star rebates in your area.
Now is the time to update your old drafty, peeling windows with energy
efficient, low maintenance vinyl windows that can save you as much as
15% on your energy bills. In addition, by purchasing windows
manufactured by JELD-WEN, Pella, Andersen, CertainTeed, and others you
